What’s new in…….Brize Norton

As the largest RAF base, made up of people from now closed satellite sites in Oxfordshire, Brize Norton seemed the perfect place to listen to the community talk about their communication and connection needs and ‘test’ our Portal planning as an alternative to social media.

Since our introductory newsletter last quarter e50K has received a grant from the Oxfordshire eScalate Fund to support the gathering of information from the Brize Norton community (through meet & greets, intimate focus groups and 1:1 interview sessions). The information and feedback from the Brize Norton community will be used to better understand the community and its online needs. 

A PORTAL to a new World

I am a technophoebe. Not only that, but tech also genuinely seems to hate me and as such malfunctions around me constantly! I think it knows I hate it – it must. 

So, you can imagine my friends, family and co-workers surprise when, after joining e50K a community of military spouses and partners investing time into helping other enhance and develop their unique environments, I began to talk about a how important the online portal project would be for the community.

If I am honest when an e50K colleague first mentioned an online portal I thought – why? Isn’t that just social media platforms like Facebook/Instagram/twitter? – perhaps you are thinking the same? And you would be right too, most people don’t really know what a portal does (it’s me – I was most people)

So here is a layman’s understanding (please forgive me those of you are ‘live by the tech’) taken from google, obviously.

• Broadly speaking, the definition of social media is any platform that allows you to share information, photos, or ideas with other users in an online community.

• A portal is a website or web page providing information, photos, or ideas and access or links to other sites in an online community

Its obvious why we are struggling to interpret the difference right! Perhaps a better way is to show you the difference……

What’s new in Catterick

e50K ran a series of successful summer school sessions for children in the Hipswell area making clay creatures, playing hide and seek in the woodland and popping popcorn on a safely built fire…and eating it of course!

Following the success of the summer series we will be putting on a Halloween themed program during the October half-term followed by Christmas activities – just 14 weeks until a visit from Santa!
